Health Disparity for LGBTQ+ on the Rise, and What We Can Do About It

Amidst all the glitter and rainbow flags, there’s a darker underbelly where the health of the LGBTQ+ community is once again under siege — and this time, it’s from multiple fronts.

In recent times, restrictions on gender-affirming care have morphed into a high-stakes battleground, both at the state and national levels. While our community stands stronger and prouder than ever, the voices of right-wing politicians often drown out our chorus of resilience. It’s high time we rewrite that tune.

A recent courtroom saga in Alabama has put the hard-won victories of same-sex couples for equal access to in-vitro fertilization (IVF) at risk. And let’s not forget, a slew of federal protections, including those guarding against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, hang precariously on the outcome of this fall’s election.

Let’s be clear: Access to essential healthcare for LGBTQ+ folks is not a debate or a trend. It’s not a “woke” issue or a diversity initiative. It’s a fundamental equity matter that demands unwavering support from all corners — including employers and health insurers, who cover the healthcare needs of the majority.

Health equity should be the bedrock we all stand on. Regardless of our political leanings, we all have a stake in addressing the stark health disparities facing LGBTQ+ individuals. From depression and anxiety to cancer and chronic conditions like diabetes, these challenges hit our community disproportionately hard.

The toll isn’t just personal; it’s financial. Many of these health issues are preventable if folks get the care they need in due time. But too often, LGBTQ+ individuals are left out in the cold, facing barriers at every turn.

From headline-grabbing battles over gender-affirming care to the everyday struggle of finding a healthcare provider who gets it, LGBTQ+ folks encounter obstacles at every twist and turn in the healthcare maze. As a gay man myself, I’ve felt these barriers firsthand, and I know I’m not alone.

Even when discrimination isn’t overt, the labyrinth of health insurance and healthcare systems can leave LGBTQ+ individuals feeling lost and excluded. According to a recent survey, LGBTQ+ people are more likely to face challenges understanding their health benefits and navigating healthcare costs.

But here’s the silver lining: We know what needs to be done to bridge these gaps and ensure equitable care for all. Employers and health insurers must step up to the plate, focusing on a few key priorities:

First, let’s gather the data. Understanding the unique healthcare needs of LGBTQ+ employees is paramount. By collecting accurate data on sexual orientation and gender identity, we can tailor benefits and initiatives to better serve our community.

Next, let’s diversify provider networks. LGBTQ+ individuals deserve access to culturally competent care, from primary physicians to mental health professionals. By expanding provider networks, we increase the chances of finding care that meets our needs.

Lastly, let’s provide wrap-around support. Navigating the healthcare system can be daunting for anyone, but especially so for LGBTQ+ individuals. From care coordination to claims advocacy, extra support can make all the difference.

But the onus isn’t just on employers and insurers. LGBTQ+ individuals and allies must also advocate for our own health:

Share your identity proudly. Let your employer and health insurer know who you are and what you need.

Know your benefits. Understand what your plan covers and where you can find LGBTQ+-friendly providers.

Join LGBTQ+ employee resource groups. These communities provide vital support and advocacy within the workplace.

Engage with DEI initiatives. Make sure the LGBTQ+ voice is heard within your organization.

In the face of political turmoil, let’s not lose sight of the power we hold to enact change. By rallying around health equity, we can create a world where LGBTQ+ individuals receive the care they deserve — and thrive.
